                                                                                                                                        cB
O = Opposing                                                                                                                         F
c =clear terrain
F = friendly character
B =blocking terrain

QuoteCharacters can move in any direction, even diagonally, and through squares occupied by other friendly characters (but not opposing characters),though you can't end a character's movement in the same square as another character. You don't have to move a character its full speed value, but you must stop moving the character when it enters a square adjacent to an opposing character

The HSS character can "move through squares adjacent to opposing characters". This is what allows him to treat that intersection as clear (Pers understregning). The same would be true for a flier or someone who successfully rolled to break away. And all off of the same basis - they have a rule supporting their ability to move between/through those squares.
